Randy Savage and Terry Funk are two of wrestling’s craziest personalities ever! Even in a business where being a little wild, bizarre and unhinged is a normal occurrence, these two managed to stand out in various ways throughout their legendary careers. Randy Savage stood out due to his immense and colorful wardrobe, Terry Funk, he stood out by being completely maniacal! Both men came from wrestling families and both were in my opinion the best of their respective families. Funk and Savage shared many of the same qualities, toughness, charisma, the ability to be humble or a raving mad egotistical lunatic, whatever the situation called for. Amazingly enough Randy Savage and Terry Funk had never met in a ring before! So what would happen if these two icons squared off in the ring? Well, let’s take a look:
Randy Savage was 6’1” weighed 237 pounds and possessed a devastating arsenal of moves including: A Double Axe Handle off the top rope, inside or outside the ring, a running neck whip across the top rope, a body slam, vertical Suplex and of course his favorite move, his flying elbow off the top rope. Randy Savage was a former six-time World Heavyweight Champion and a Hall of Famer. Savage had memorable feuds with the likes of: Hulk Hogan, Ted DiBiase, Ric Flair, Jake Roberts, Jim Duggan, Brutus Beefcake, Diamond Dallas Page, Sting, Tito Santana, Ricky Steamboat and a host of others. In his career, Savage made his reputation by being one of the most vicious wrestlers in his generation, never one to shy away from eye gouges or choke holds, Savage wasn’t afraid to get dirty if it meant gaining an advantage over his adversary.
Macho Man also had the ability to reinvent himself throughout his career as well. In the late eighties, Savage often wore gorgeous sequined capes or robes with a sequined bandana and aviator sunglasses and by his side was the stunning, Miss Elizabeth who was almost always color coordinated with Savage’s robe or cape, together the two became the most successful male/female combination of the eighties and even into the nineties and many could argue still are to this day. When wrestling changed in the mid to late nineties, Randy Savage did as well. Gone were his flashy tights, jackets, cowboy hats and sunglasses, now the Macho Man was dressing in black and white and had adapted his style from an aerial artist to more of a Wildman brawler. The change served him well as Savage was able to capture his sixth and final world title in 1999.
Terry Funk was 6’1” and was 246 pounds of mean, nasty, ornery Texan. Funk was only a one-time World Champion, but do not be fooled by that stat, Terry Funk is in the top-five greatest wrestlers of all-time and it’s not even debatable. In a career that spanned the globe, Funk has had some of the greatest matches ever seen. His rivalries include but are not limited to: Jumbo Tsuruta, Riki Choshu, Cactus Jack, Sabu, Jerry Lawler, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Shane Douglas, Carlos Colon, Abdullah The Butcher, The Shiek and Dusty Rhodes. Funk can go any style his opponent brings, if you want to stay on the mat, Funk can mat wrestler for hours, if you want to take it outside and into the crowd, Funk likes that too! If you want to take to the air, well Terry can do a moonsault! Terry wrestled for so many years and so many different styled opponents he was able to add to his own arsenal of moves that included: A piledriver, a Neckbreaker, headbutts and using weapons when he felt like it. Funk’s favorite finishing moves however were the Funk Spinning Toe Hold and as mentioned previously a Moonsault off the top rope, or off a ladder take your pick.
Like Savage, Funk also adapted to the times changing in professional wrestling. Funk was a great technician in the seventies, he would adapt to more of a brawler in the eighties and his feud with Ric Flair. Then in the nineties, Terry would go completely insane and become the godfather of Hardcore Wrestling. Terry has spilled buckets of blood and sweat throughout the world and is revered in Japan. Terry has wrestled decades and was a major star in any era whether he was headlining a Tokyo Dome show or the main attraction of a local independent show, Terry Funk was going to give you the best he had on that night. Funk also wasn’t above biting, choking, gouging his opponents in order to gain a win. There are many tough guys in wrestling (and many pretend tough guys too) but make no mistake about it, Terry Funk is near or at the top of everybody’s list!
With a brief run down of the moves, feuds and styles of Terry Funk and Randy Savage all that remains is Who would win? You tell me, sound off in the comments below and tell me who you think would have won this match-up and why they would have won?
